Project Purpose: To build a park on the site of a deserted shipyard for landscape quality, recreation, environmental and historical education, and tourism.

Design Philosophy and Intent: Design is a process of preserving and modifying existing forms, and, if necessary, creating new forms to visualize the significance or functional, cultural, historical and ecological meanings of a site.

A challenging setting
Challenge 1: fluctuating water levels. With the existing lake connected through the Qijiang River to the sea, water levels fluctuate up to 1.1 meters daily. A network of bridges was constructed at various elevations and integrated with terraced planting beds so that native weeds can be grown and visitors can feel the breath of the ocean.

Challenge 2: flood control versus old trees protection: Regulations of the Water Management Bureau required old banyan trees at the bank to be cut down in order to widen the river channel for flooding water flow. The solution was digging a parallel ditch on the other side of the trees, leaving them intact as an island of preservation.

Project Statement
The Trinity River Corridor Design Guidelines will establish the character and measure of sustainability for the largest green infrastructure initiative in the United States — a 9-mile urban park, floodway and transportation improvement project that will anchor the transformation of central Dallas into a quilt of mixed-use and transit-oriented neighborhoods. The scope, scale and design challenges posed by this project are unique; they also serve to underscore the role of green infrastructure in re-casting cities as sustainable environments.

Project Goals and Objectives
To create a didactic landscape unlike any other: where art and sustainability will be coexist throughout the built form, advancing the city’s most progressive goals and values, where infrastructure will be rendered green infrastructure, where vastness will be sensed and understood alongside the minute, and where Dallas will rediscover and redefine itself.”

A landscape that is at once ecologically viable, educational, offering diverse opportunities for recreation and exercise, and functioning as a connective tissue between adjoining communities.

A landscape that provides a high degree of ecological service, from carbon sequestration, water recycling and bio-filtration, to the production of energy from renewable resources.

A landscape that restores access and beauty to the Trinity River, and enhances the floodplain as an expression of the Texas Blackland Prairie.

A landscape that integrates infrastructure — power transmission, transportation, flood protection and conveyance — within the context of ecology and recreation.

A landscape that embraces art, from the conception of landforms and its material quality to the provision of venues for major works — permanent and temporary.

Key Design Proposals

The River: Practically the entirety of the Trinity River from the confluence of the Elm Fork and West Fork to the entrance to the Trinity Forest — a 9-mile course adjacent to the city’s Downtown — is proposed to be relocated to make room for the Trinity Parkway and recreational lakes. River channel meanders, an oxbow lake, emergent wetlands and multi-level riparian terraces are proposed to improve water quality and to establish the new river alignment as a viable end-to-end wildlife corridor.

Trails: More than 30-miles of trails are proposed within the floodway, facilitating jogging and walking as well as equestrians and commuter cyclists. A 20-foot wide primary trail meanders across the river, providing equal access to the park from both Downtown and West Dallas. Limited trailhead parking is provided; rather, public transit facilities are under consideration in support of the park and system of trails.

Parkway: The Trinity Parkway portion of the guidelines call for a variety of green design measures, including wind turbines (to take advantage of its perched elevation), solar panels for visual attenuation, harvested rain water for irrigation, bio-filtration wetlands for storm runoff control, and vegetated vertical walls (GSky system) to dampen sound, control glare and absorb carbon emissions. A combination of median and shoulder plantings intend to blur the line between the park and the parkway, eliciting the perception that the vehicles are “visitors” in what is otherwise a public recreation and habitat resource.

Public Art: The guidelines propose a three-part art program: site-specific temporary works scattered throughout (bi-annual events); one single major permanent work, strategically located on the Central Island; and 12 or so “Council Circles” — placed “off the beaten path” for contemplation and education, each designed by a different artist.

Eco-restorers: Working in conjunction with a national bio-filtration expert, about 3.5-acres worth of floating wetlands are proposed in the 60-acre “Natural Lake” to help naturally polish the lake waters and provide habitat for fish and freshwater invertebrates. Consisting of dispersed 80-foot diameter rings filled with aquatic plants, the restorers will offer didactic evidence of the park’s function as green infrastructure.

King's Cross Central is the redevelopment of 72 acres of redundant rail marshalling yards sandwiched between King's Cross and St Pancras Stations. It presents one of the most exciting and significant development and regeneration opportunities within the UK. The intention of the masterplan is to create a fully accessible and integrated piece of the city including a whole range of cultural, commercial and residential uses. Townshend Landscape Architects were appointed as a core member of the masterplan team to develop a scheme that will be a strong framework for future development. Outline planning permission was granted for the masterplan in April 2006. Since then, Townshend Landscape Architects have been appointed to develop the detailed design for the public realm for the first two phases of King's Cross Central, with work on site scheduled to commence on the first phase in the summer of 2007.

Camley Street Natural Park was created from an old coal yard back in 1984. It sits in the middle of King’s Cross, alongside the sparkling new Eurostar station at St Pancras. It is popular with all kinds of people seeking respite from the buzz of the city around them, as well as being a hub for London Wildlife Trust volunteers. Camley Street has a full time education programme for Camden schools, but these and other groups must book (Camden schools have priority over booking). Individuals are welcome to drop in during opening hours or call for details of holiday play activities. A runner up in this year’s Observer Ethical Awards, the reserve has a visitor centre and provides natural habitat for birds, butterflies, amphibians and a rich variety of plant life.

Nestled in between transport hubs ancient and modern, St Pancras International and the Regent’s Canal, it is something of a paradise in the middle of hectic King’s Cross. It attracts all kinds of wildlife and all kinds of people and has become a vital habitat and vital community resource, of which all who are involved with it are rightly proud.

Camley Street Natural Park is a two acre green oasis found in the heart of London, next door to King’s Cross Station. It is run as a community nature reserve, meaning that most of the work is completed by volunteers. The park functions very well as a refuge for local plants and animals. However it is funded because it is a community resource and not because it is a high quality green space.

Marks Barfield Architects have designed a 18-metre-high walkway through the canopies of sweet chestnut, lime and deciduous oak trees in Kew Royal Botanical Garden The 400-tonne steel structure was designed to blend in without harming its sensitive environment.The walkway aims to give an insight into the ecology of trees from the roots to the canopy. Visitors enter the “Rhizotron” first, a large crack in the ground leading to a semi-submerged concrete structure with a viewing area showing underground root structures. From the Rhizotron, a lift and stairs lead to the “Xstrata Tree Top Walkway”.

Kew Garden produces over 100 tonnes of waste plant materials every week. As part of Kew’s commitment to practise sustainable horticulture, they recycle 99% of their organic waste. The method used to manage the organic waste is known as Composting.
The Advantages is Compost adds more nutrients to the soil, to reduce the use of artificial fertilizers, Improves the soils structure so plants grows better and healthy, therefore making them resistant to pest and diseases and Compost can be used as mulch on soil surfaces to help retain water,Helps to reduce the amount of weeds present.

How compost is made?
The woody trees and shrubs from felled tree branches materials are screened and shredded into wood chips
Herbaceous plant materials (leaves & grass clipping) are only shredding.
The wood chips are mixed on a ratio of 4:1 with the fresh stable manure, while the shredder herbaceous material is mixed on an equal ratio to the manure.
These heaps are watered with stored rain water and turned regularly to maintain a low temperature. David Barnes said sometimes the temperature of the heaps can rise up to 850C that is high enough to set itself ablaze but the best temperature for the compost process is at 55oC. Therefore allowing micro-organism (bacteria and fungi) to break down the plant materials. The compost process takes about 10 – 12 weeks before it’s been taken back to the garden to be reused as mulch

The city of Wuhan, first termed as such in 1927, has a population of approximately 9,100,000 people (2006), with about 6,100,000 residents in its urban area. In the 1920s, Wuhan was the capital of a leftist Kuomintang (KMT) government led by Wang Jingwei in opposition to Chiang Kai-shek, now Wuhan is recognized as the political, economic, financial, cultural, educational and transportation center of central China.

Yellow Crane Tower
is a famous and historic tower, often rebuilt, that stands on Sheshan (Snake Hill), at the bank of Yangtze River in the Wuchang District, of the city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province of central China. Tourists can obtain a fine view of the Yangtze River from the top of the tower. Yellow Crane Tower is considered one of the Four Great Towers of China. In its modern version it has the appearance of an ancient tower but is built of modern materials and includes an elevator. Displays are presented at each level. To the east on the hill, a large temple bell may be struck by tourists for a small fee. During the week-long celebration of China's National Day (October 1st), ethnic and court dances are demonstrated in the western yard.
Legend states that a scholar was standing in the tower, when he saw a crane flying past. He asked to hitch a ride on the crane, which took him to the Celestial Palace, and he was never to be seen again.

I find Rotterdam a maior port city, to be none of the above. IT's a big city alright, but it is clean, friendly, and picturesque in many ways. Rotterdam is a sprawling metropolis , built around several islands on the massive maas river, the maas is massive, much wider than the rhein. it is so big that by afternoon it seems almost as rough as the sea .There are over a dozen ports along the river, and large canals run inland toward the city center. the Schouwburgplein is a major shopping mall and concert ground. i foundthe aluminum flooring of thi square amusing , until i got tired of sounding like i was walking on old stadium steps. It's not all newness in the downtown. in fact, there's quite a number of old buildings that have been preserved that add a degree of color.The Stadthuis borders the shopping district to the East, and has a beautiful market square loaded with restaurants and cafés. Not far from it is the Binnenrote, which was hosting its traditional Sunday market while I was there -- it was huge, probably about a full block huge, with thousands of people there. Bordering around the shopping district were several residential streets with plenty of 17th and 18th century red-brick architecture.Closer to the water is the Wijnhaven, which is probably Rotterdam's best-known hangout. The Wijnhaven is home to Rotterdam's maritime museum, and the harbor is filled with old relics, all surrounded by the area's trendiest bars and clubs. The Old Harbor, Oudehaven, is off the photo to the left, and is a regular marina for the locals. The area was pretty quiet when I went by because the majority of people populate the shopping district by day, then shift over to the Wijnhaven at night.

I was pleasantly surprised. I expected to see a lot of new -- but not so much character in such a big city. I rather enjoyed my trip there, and can see why it is a popular place for big-city-oriented foreigners.

So many people say London has a ice bar is so cool. So i have been to there in Christmas time, Almost everything at the bar is sculpted out of ice.sit on ice benches,drink from ice glasses served from a bar made of ice. and all the ice that creates bar is shipped from the same source, The Torne River in Lapland. Even every ice glass you will drink out of is made from the same River water ice and tested to be cleaner than drinking water! so cold every think is made by ice like wall,(Unbelievable). And you just sit about 5 minute you will fell the cold get in to your body! but if fun

Bike Dispenser

Leave it to the Dutch to come up with something so clever, so green, so cool. Basically its like a giant ‘Pez’ dispenser, dishing out bikes on one end and refilling on the other. Apparently it works like this, you pay a small fee in some cities which have free bike programs its free, you get a bike to use at your leisure. Stroll around as much as you want, return it when you wish to any of the neighborhood Bike Dispensers. Don’t feel like returning it, well you can leave it as is, the bikes are tagged with RFID’s; Bike Dispenser owners/operators can then find the free range bikes about the city and return them to their pens.

City Surfing

Set to open in 2011, this project will be the world’s first outdoor artificial surfing machine - and will be constructed in A discarded dock in East London. The aim of the project, obviously, is to give city dwellers a local place to surf - saving them the trip to the coast.

Proposed by Steve Jones, some crazy ‘adventure sports’ ninja, the wave machine can “be set to make the surf break left and right from a central peak, allowing surfers to ride comfortably without fear of collision - a hazard which plagues the increasingly crowded breaks in Devon and Cornwall. Floodlit surfing and screens highlighting riders’ best moves aim to attract an estimated 100,000 surfers and body-boarders a year, as well as half a million spectators”. My ninjas, please! Sounds like a video game.

As a side note, the project is being backed by David Taylor - who is also building 5,000 new homes in the area, and Biota!, the Terry Farrelldesigned aquarium that will replicate life in the Amazon in a tank the size of 12 Olympic swimming pools

Architect Duncan Barker-Brown idear: “The house is highly insulated and doesn’t require a lot of warming up. In the summer the solar panels provide hot water and in the winter warm water which is ideal for underfloor heating.

“There is also an energy efficient condensing gas boiler but it doesn’t have to work very hard. The house is a good example of what can be done with a little bit of ingenuity. A lot of our work now is on little bits of land that nobody else wants.”

The house was built in structurally insulated panels (SIPS) made offsite so the house could be constructed swiftly and at the same time making the building almost waterproof. The panels are made from recycled polyurethane and chipboard and are highly insulated
